Looking Forward…

We’re looking forward to Spring! We’re energized by change, by growth, by the opportunities to connect and share through creativity and music. We are so looking forward to the Great Southeast Homeschool Convention in Greenville, SC on March 16-18! It will be our third year at this event. Our previous experiences have been joyful, meeting families, seeing the enthusiasm of children as they learn to make music in moments, sharing in the experiences of enrichment and growth, contributing to creative culture and education. We can’t wait! We’re working hard to bring quality instruments to budding young musicians and to the budding young musicians at heart too! We look forward to meeting you all. Happy Spring!

How can something so simple have such a BIG impact?

Many discerning parents have thought about giving their child’s intellectual and creative training an early start. And why not? There are many studies out there pointing to the fact that the mind of a young child can be a prime arena for learning. If you are planning a course of learning for your toddler, there are a few considerations to be made.  First, if musical training is among your choices, is your child too small to navigate a piano, or most other musical instruments?  Secondly, how much of an investment are you planning at this early stage of endeavor?  When I was a young parent, cost was always a factor. If you are a grandparent thinking of helping with your grandchild’s early education, cost may be a factor as well. Many instruments with lessons are not cheap.

A simple answer may be to find a way to introduce your child to music education with an inexpensive instrument that will be durable, can handle sticky fingers after lunch, and comes complete with its own learning system that will offer immediate results; something so simple that “Yes, even a parent can do this.”  So here is one very good solution for your family’s learning adventure.  The zither, or lap harp is small and inexpensive; especially when compared with many of the other instruments available. This musical instrument is extremely easy for small hands to navigate.  Naturally, parents should supervise their use.  Nevertheless, the simple plucking of the strings will easily produce rich and beautiful tones for everyone’s enjoyment.  When I first began playing music, one important notion that was impressed upon me early on was the likelihood that a poorly made instrument will produce poor tonal quality and may frustrate the new musician to the point of quitting.  Yet, with many instruments, quality often translates into higher cost.

At some point you may decide you want to provide your aspiring young musician with professional lessons.  At this stage of learning, this is not at all necessary.  Music books can be purchased inexpensively that can easily teach both you and your child to read music. The books fit between the bridges of the zither with notes carefully arranged that will direct you to pluck various melodies without knowing how to read music.  These same books also teach you and your children the basics of music theory so that everyone is learning to read music while already playing music.  One can naturally follow the other without the difficulty of an overly structured series of music lessons.  That can always come later.

Of course, I am speaking of zithers handcrafted by Appalachian Spirit Folk Instruments and music books for zither produced by World of Harmony Music.  Our instruments close the gap between quality and expense.  They are the perfect choice for the early music education for your children, regardless of whether they are toddlers or teens.  The music books arranged for zither are in and of themselves a complete learning guide that can even translate into a music program for classes on a larger scale.  Together, it has become our mission to create the opportunity for everyone to experience a lifetime of musical enjoyment with high quality materials and craftsmanship at the most affordable prices.
