Appalachian Spirit Folk Instruments & World of Harmony Music
“Your Homeschool Solution for Music Education.”
As we continue our participation in the Great South East Homeschool Convention, it seems more and more homeschool families are voicing a desire to add music education to their homeschooling curriculum. However, for many families this will involve expenses beyond their means. Parents are often faced with the choices of purchasing or leasing instruments for one or more children, and deciding to hire a teacher to provide lessons. One other issue is scheduling this instruction to fit the needs of your home.
For some households these are not areas of great concern. On the other hand, the typical homeschool family has only one income while the other parent’s time and energy is devoted to providing quality education to their young. Homeschool families may become faced with making decisions similar to any other school, public or private: Budgeting. What to concentrate on now and what gets temporarily shelved, or cut altogether. Typically, this means music education becomes one of the necessary sacrifices.
The good news is, Appalachian Spirit Folk Instruments together with World of Harmony Music have a complete and inexpensive alternative to the high cost of other instruments and private lessons.
There is an answer to every time and budgetary objection your circumstances can throw at you.

Parents who homeschool their children are making sacrifice enough to provide what they believe are the best solutions for their families. My wife, Liza and I know this first hand as former homeschool parents ourselves. Our children are now grown and building families and careers of their own. You can bet our grandchildren will benefit from early childhood music education.

Many discerning parents have thought about giving their child’s intellectual and creative training an early start. And why not? There are many studies out there pointing to the fact that the mind of a young child can be a prime arena for learning. If you are planning a course of learning for your toddler, there are a few considerations to be made. First, if musical training is among your choices, is your child too small to navigate a piano, or most other musical instruments? Secondly, how much of an investment are you planning at this early stage of endeavor? When I was a young parent, cost was always a factor. If you are a grandparent thinking of helping with your grandchild’s early education, cost may be a factor as well. Many instruments with lessons are not cheap.
A simple answer may be to find a way to introduce your child to music education with an inexpensive instrument that will be durable, can handle sticky fingers after lunch, and comes complete with its own learning system that will offer immediate results; something so simple that “Yes, even a parent can do this.” So here is one very good solution for your family’s learning adventure. The zither, or lap harp is small and inexpensive; especially when compared with many of the other instruments available. This musical instrument is extremely easy for small hands to navigate. Naturally, parents should supervise their use. Nevertheless, the simple plucking of the strings will easily produce rich and beautiful tones for everyone’s enjoyment. When I first began playing music, one important notion that was impressed upon me early on was the likelihood that a poorly made instrument will produce poor tonal quality and may frustrate the new musician to the point of quitting. Yet, with many instruments, quality often translates into higher cost.
At some point you may decide you want to provide your aspiring young musician with professional lessons. At this stage of learning, this is not at all necessary. Music books can be purchased inexpensively that can easily teach both you and your child to read music. The books fit between the bridges of the zither with notes carefully arranged that will direct you to pluck various melodies without knowing how to read music. These same books also teach you and your children the basics of music theory so that everyone is learning to read music while already playing music. One can naturally follow the other without the difficulty of an overly structured series of music lessons. That can always come later.
Of course, I am speaking of zithers handcrafted by Appalachian Spirit Folk Instruments and music books for zither produced by World of Harmony Music. Our instruments close the gap between quality and expense. They are the perfect choice for the early music education for your children, regardless of whether they are toddlers or teens. The music books arranged for zither are in and of themselves a complete learning guide that can even translate into a music program for classes on a larger scale. Together, it has become our mission to create the opportunity for everyone to experience a lifetime of musical enjoyment with high quality materials and craftsmanship at the most affordable prices.
As with all brand new stringed instruments, it will take a little time to “play in” new zither strings to where they stay consistently in tune. All our zithers are tuned before they leave our shop, but they may fall a bit out of tune during shipping. When tuning, make very very small, gentle adjustments using the tuning wrench. This video, created by Debbie Center of World of Harmony Music, will help guide you through the process.
We send extra music wire with all our instruments. These videos will guide you through the process of changing a broken string.
We want our zithers to be enjoyed by musicians young and old for generations to come. Please note for safety that young children should not tune the instrument and it should be played under adult supervision.
