About Our Zithers…

“Music…gives wings to the mind, a soul to the universe, flight to the imagination, a charm to sadness, a life to everything.” ~ Plato

Founded in 2013, Appalachian Spirit Folk Instruments specializes in creating lap harp zithers, also known as plucked psalteries, that reflect the inspiration of the Appalachian spirit. We are dedicated to producing the highest quality instruments possible, using rich tonal woods and fine finishes. We currently offer zithers made in oak, cherry, poplar or pine. We also use Appalachian Ash and Black Walnut based on the availability of these woods. Our zithers are created to be enjoyed by musicians of any age and musical experience and are built to last for generations.

Your instruments look lovely. Do you take custom designs? I would love to see one with daffodils as the flower accent.

      Hello!

We do not take custom designs however, we have done variations on our current designs. For example, we have placed the dogwood blossoms or roses on a Harmony Zither at the customer’s request for an additional charge of $10.00.

PLEASE READ IF CONSIDERING PURCHASING A ZITHER!

    1. I have owned two previous zithers–the one I purchased from Appalachian Spirit Folk Instruments is far superior to both of them.
    2. The craftsmanship and sound are both outstanding.
    3. The company’s replies to posted inquiries are 100% accurate, e.g., dimensions, sound, tuning.
    4. The company’s customer service is excellent–they clearly care about quality.

I am wondering what G (at the bottom string) are your zithers tuned to? The G below middle C or the G above middle C?
    Thank you.

Hello! The bootom G string on our zithers is above middle C. We’re so glad you’re enjoying your zither!

Hi! I am wondering if there is a difference in sound if the instrument is made from a different wood-type? And if so, is it possible to hear the difference in a sound-fragment online?

Hi Karen! Because of the size of our instruments, there is really no difference in the sound of the different woods. Some may notice a slightly more mellow tone in the Poplar or Southern Pine zithers, while the Oak or Appalachian Ash may have a brighter sound. Many people have played the different woods side by side at events and not noticed a difference at all. We don’t have specific samples of the different zithers available, but at this link you’ll find a few videos of our zithers being played: https://www.facebook.com/pg/AppalachianSpiritFolkInstruments/videos/?ref=page_internal

Are these suitable for adults ? I’m always seeing some and seem to refer to child’s instrument.
Im looking for something for myself. I miss playing an instrument due to illness I have lost the use of most of my left land and a bit of my right. However, I’m sure I could manage this.

      Hello Kathy!

Our zithers are created to be real musical instruments that can be enjoyed and passed on from one generation to the next. We use only solid tonal woods and quality finishes. We work to keep our instruments affordable so a family can introduce their children to the joy of music with a real musical instrument rather than a toy. Many of our customers are adults, from beginning musicians to the experienced ones, who seek to expand their enjoyment of making music. Please let us know if you have any other questions. We’ll be happy to help.

      Hello Linda,

Unfortunately, we don’t have carrying cases available at this time. I carry my own zither in a sturdy canvas bag and it’s been perfectly safe. Each of our zithers comes with a tuning pack which contains a music pick, a tuning wrench and extra music wire in case you ever need to change a string. We guarantee the music wire for life. If you should ever need more, just contact us and we’ll be glad to send it to you at no charge.

      Thank you,
      Liza
