Proud owner of #1581. It’s beautifully crafted, with a color of stain that perfectly complements the mountain rose design I ordered. Bill could not have been more helpful in deciding on the wood to get my lap harp made from. And playing it is a fun and relaxing way to get your mind off all the nonsense going on in the world. Order at least one of the books when you get your lap harp, though I find that the music for the Music Maker zither also works with the way the Appalachian lap harp is tuned. Just be sure to take your time tuning it up. Look at Debbie Center’s YouTube video for tips. Buy one! You’ll love it!

Luv my zither, my shipping was not good received it with a damaged box from ups so the instrument was fine praise God but I tuned it with panatuner and the sring broke when contacting this company they were so accommodating she called me directly at 10 o’clock at night sent me more string and a song book so I could play in church at no charge they are amazing not only at customer service but at sacrificing their time and efforts to bring us such beautiful made and sounding instruments thank you both.

    1. I have owned two previous zithers–the one I purchased from Appalachian Spirit Folk Instruments is far superior to both of them.
    2. The craftsmanship and sound are both outstanding.
    3. The company’s replies to posted inquiries are 100% accurate, e.g., dimensions, sound, tuning.
    4. The company’s customer service is excellent–they clearly care about quality.

    1. Liza Post author

Max, thank you! Your words are an immeasurable blessing. We always strive to be better with diligent craftsmanship and dedication to sound quality, structural integrity and overall appearance. Our goal is to share that joy of making music by musicians of all ages!

Hi, I am curious as to the differences between your various zithers. You have Natural Design, Harmony Design and Traditional zithers. The apparent difference between the Natural Design and the Traditional zithers appears to be the paining on the front. Is the Harmony Design put together differently? It seems to have different sides on the zether. I am considering puting in an order for a Dark Cherry Zither and would like a bit more detail.

    Thanks for your help.

    Maralen Goodenough

    1. Liza Post author

      Good evening Maralen,

Your observations are quite correct. The Natural design series involves the application of original art work reflecting the natural
world. The Harmony zither is a blend, or harmony of two different woods: Cherry over a curly maple frame. Curly maple and black walnut (another zither) is far more expensive than the woods normally used. The Natural Design involves extra material and labor. This is why these zithers are $10.00 more than the Traditional Series which are all quality hard woods, just unadorned and of normal cost for us. There are no differences in quality of building or tone. They are all equal in that regard. The differences are merely aesthetic. The Dark Cherry is very much like the Harmony except the frame is also cherry instead of the curly maple. Aside from the the differences I have described, all of these zithers are built the same and bare the same structural integrity. We build our instruments with the intention that they will last for generations. I hope this has been helpful to you. Please let me know if you have any further questions.

      Most sincerely,
      Bill LaCasse

I’m thinking of ordering a harmony zither for both my son and daughter. I think she’d like the mountain rose design, but I don’t see a lot for men. Do you have other design options?

    1. Liza Post author

      Hello Melissa!

I’ve just added some additional zithers to our store page. We’ll be fully updating our website early next year, but the selections I’ve added to our current store page will allow you to order immediately. As of right now, the dragonfly zithers are the design that appeal most to young men. I’ve added an image of that design done with a cinnamon stain. We also started creating our Southern Pine Zithers with a choice of red, blue or green stain. These have been very popular! Please let us know if you have any other questions. We’re happy to help!

  6. Luke

Hey, why are the traditional walnut zithers an extra $10? Not quibbling or haggling, just genuinely interested. Is the wood rarer or does it produce a better sound? Thanks!

    1. Liza Post author

      Hello Luke!

Finding black walnut in the appropriate size to create our zithers is rarer and the wood is more expensive. In regards to sound, all the woods we use are native to the Appalachian region and have wonderful tonal quality. Harder woods, like oak and ash may have a slightly brighter sound while poplar and pine tend to have a more mellow sound. Cherry and walnut fall in the middle of this range. The difference is very subtle. Please let us know if you have any other questions!

  7. Mike LeVasseur

Hi William – we met you and your wife at the HomeSchool Expo yesterday in Atlanta. Our son loves it (and so do I). I did not see any on your website but was wondering if you make autoharps? Just curious.
Thanks for the care and attention you take with your craft!

    1. Liza Post author

Hi Mike! We’re so happy to hear that you’re enjoying your new zither! Our goal is to increase our family of folk instruments. Our first Bowed Psalteries wil be available by the end of the summer. We will also be working autoharps soon. Please like us on Facebook and Instagram. We’ll keep you posted on our progress.

  8. Linda Robin Hudgins Horne

Can you refurbish my grandmother’s old zither? Replace strings and refinish etc? I can send you a picture.

  9. Kathy

Just curious if there is a difference in the sound quality between the poplar and the Harmony cherry curly maple……I really love the Mountain Rose ( I love roses and hummingbirds) I want to be able to make up my mind and make a decision in a few weeks, I see where you said that it would be a bit extra to get the flower on the Harmony Cherry Curly Maple compared to the regular Natural design series. I also would rather send a check instead of using PayPal…please tell me who to write out the check and where to send it with my order….many thanks.

    1. Liza Post author

      Hello Kathy!

The differences in sound between the woods is very subtle. Poplar tends to have a slightly warmer sound while the cherry/curly maple combination has a slightly brighter one. We have done the Mountain Rose design on our Harmony zithers. The total cost would be $92.00 plus shipping. We’ll be happy to take your order by check. Just message your address to our e-mail, appalachianspiritfolk@gmail.com so we can give you the proper shipping rate. You can mail your check to Appalachian Spirit Folk Instruments 250 Mill Street #PW2-261 Taylors SC 29687. Please also feel free to give us a call at 864.901.4054 or send a message if you have any other questions. We’ll be happy to help!

No. While the World of Harmony Music Books are the ones we love and recommend, other zither music sheets can be used as long as the sheets are the same shape and measure less than 4.5″ across the top and 12.75″ across the bottom.

  10. Christene Catlin

I bought one at a homeschool convention I am having trouble finding a carrying case to fit. Do you have any recommendations?

    1. Liza Post author

Hi! we hope you’re enjoying your zither! Unfortunately, we don’t have carrying cases available at this time. I carry my own zither in a sturdy canvas tote bag and it’s been very safe.

  11. Ismael A Castanon

Can I buy strings also from you and does it come with the music sheets? I am a Catholic and wondered if there are any sheets that you can provide that use Catholic music? Or do you know where I might acquire any of that style? Thanks. I am interested in purchasing

    1. Liza Post author

Each of our zithers comes with a tuning pack which includes a tuning wrench, music pick and extra music wire. We guarantee our music wire and will send more to you free of charge should you ever need it. Music books may be purchased through World of Harmony music, http://www.worldofharmonymusic.com. There is a lovely hymn book called Shall We Gather at the Zither which has songs such as Amazing Grace and Just As I Am. We do not know of any Catholic sheet music for zither but World Of Harmony also has a book called I Can Write Music Too that allows to create your own music arrangements for your zither.

  12. Diane Shortt

Is it possible to add the mountain rose or the dogwood flower to the Harmony Design ( cherry / curly maple )? If so what would the price be?

    Thank you, Diane Shortt

    1. Liza Post author

      Hello Diane,

I am so sorry we did not see your message sooner. We would love to create a Harmony Zither for you with either a Mountain Rose or Dogwood Design on it. Normally, the design would be $10 more, but since you wish to order a Harmony it will on be an additional $5. I have Harmony Zithers which I am completing now and can have ready to ship within a week. I’ll just need to confirm your order as soon as you can. Since this is a special order, I can invoice you through PayPal for the cost of the zither, $82, plus $15 shipping and handling. If you decide on the Dogwood design, just let me know if you prefer the pink or white blossoms. We’ll be glad to create either one.

      Thank you!
      Liza LaCasse

We are interested in buying a zither. I had a few questions first, about the zither construction, before placing an order.

    1. Are some wood types better for dry climates? Is a humidifier needed in the instrument case or instrument?
    2. Is a seam splits do you repair them?

    1. Liza Post author

In a climate controlled environment, like your home, any of our woods should do fine. If you experience extreme dry conditions, especially in the winter due to heated air, you may want to have a simple humidifier in the room where you keep your zither and any other musical instruments you may have. With any instrument, you want to always protect against extremes in temperatures and environment, like heat from direct sunlight. We’ve never had an issue with seams splitting in our instruments, but if this should happen, we would be very happy to reset it for you.

    1. Liza Post author

      Hello Marco,
Yes, we have shipped to Europe via USPS First Class International service. Shipping & Handling would cost $40.00 for any one of our zithers except for Oak. Due to the heavier weight of the wood, shipping would be $45.00. Please let us know if you have any other questions. We look forward to hearing from you!

  14. Ronald Lundwall

Today, after three weeks of great anticipation,my zither arrived. All I can say is WOW! The sound quality and your workmanship Bill is outstanding. I speak with a degree of authority in that I’ve been a wood worker for nearly 80 years. I’m also convinced, this instrument, not a toy, will last for many generations to come. Thank you so much and God bless.
    Ron Lundwall

P.S. It is most gratifying to see American craftsmen-ship at its finest .

  15. Connie E Clark

I am interested in your homeschool instrument and music set. I live in Taylors. Can I come by your place? Is it in the Old Mill?

    1. Liza Post author

      Hi Connie!

We’ll be out at Taylors Mill for First Friday on August 4. We’ll also be at the Travelers Rest Farmers Market on July 29. We’ll be happy to meet you at the Mill if another time is more convenient. Just give me a call at 864.901.4054. Thank you!

  16. Edith Palmer

Yes was looking to order your Osk one does it come with music sheets if not how do I get those your Zithers are beautiful . Thank you

    1. Liza Post author

We would love to build an oak zither for you! When you place your order just let us know in the notes if you prefer a red oak stain (which is darker) or a golden oak stain (which is lighter). Music books can be ordered through World of Harmony Music. There are also single song music sheets which can be ordered and downloaded from that site. Just click on on the Zither Sheet Music tab at the top of this page for more information. Thank you!

I wondered what the size of the standard zither is. It looks kind of small Can I buy strings also from you and does it come with the music sheets? I am a Catholic and wondered if there are any sheets that you can provide that use Catholic music? Or do you know where I might acquire any of that style? Thanks. I am interested in purchasing if I can find out this information. Those are beautiful instruments.
